Iranians collected six medals at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, the US, including three gold medals.
On Sunday, Sohrab Moradi stole the headlines as the 29-year-old Iranian grabbed all three golds in the men’s 94kg contests.
Moradi, who won gold at the Rio Olympics last year, also broke two world records in winning his weight class, to take an easy win over Lithuania’s Aurimas Didzbalis by 29 kilograms.
Having lifted the 183kg weight on his third attempt, Moradi claimed the snatch gold, while Moradi’s compatriot, Seyed Ayoob Mousavi, finished fifth in the snatch competitions.
Moradi jumped from 220kg to 233kg on his second lift to break the clean and jerk world record of 232kg set in 2000 by Poland’s Szymon Kolecki, and better his own world record for the total by four kilograms, which he improved to 417kg.
”I wanted to surprise everybody and I did,“ said Moradi.
”I am proud to make every Iranian across the world very happy.”
Mousavi also put a fitting end to his campaign after a best lift of 214kg on his third attempt handed him a clean and jerk bronze medal and also a third-spot finish in total with 385kg.
Earlier on the night, Kianoush Rostami won a sole silver medal in the men’s 85kg snatch contests which proved to be a failure by his standards.
Two-time Olympics medalist – including a gold in Rio last year – settled for the second place in the snatch competitions after he lifted 174kg above his head – one kilogram below Chile’s Arley Méndez who won all three golds of the weight class.
Rostami, who had injured his left knee last week, missed all three clean and jerk attempts and failed to register a total.
