Four Iranian cities due on UNESCO Creative Cities Network

December 23, 2019 - Head of World Crafts Council-Asia Pacific Region Ghada Hijavi said on Monday that 10 Iranian cities have already joined UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) and four more cities are to be added to the list by end of 2019.

The cities include the southwestern city of Shiraz, northwestern city of Zanjan, northern city of Qassem Abad in Gilan Province and Iran’s western city of Malayer in Hamedan Province, IRNA wrote.

Hijavi, who is in Iran’s western city of Malayer to attend the meeting with the referees of the World Crafts Council (WCC), said that 30 cities in the Asia-Pacific Region are globalized in the field of handicrafts, among which 10 are located in Iran.

The UNESCO inspectors were warmly welcomed by the people, artists and officials of Malayer.

WCC inspectors came to Malayer to examine the provincial handicrafts and woodcarving for global registration.

Along with Hijavi, vice president of the WCC’s South Pacific, Kevin Murray, and the caretaker of global registration of Iranian cities in Iran’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, Vida Tohdi, attended the meeting.

The group is to tour industrial towns, fairs, research and training centers to complete their inspection of the city of Malayer.

The town is well-known for woodcraft businesses with 5,000 furniture and woodcarving workshops, 9,000 masters, and 20,000 artists involved in manufacturing furniture and ornaments created by woodcarving.
