Erdoghan, Rouhani discuss KRG referendum on phone

Ankara, Sep 24, IRNA – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed referendum in the Iraqi Kurdistan's semi-autonomous region with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in a telephone conversation late on Sunday.

During the phone talks, both officials, in addition to sharing views on bilateral relations, dealt with the latest developments in the region, including Iraqi Kurdistan’s decision to a hold a referendum.

The two officials also agreed that both countries have completely coordinative stance regarding the issue.

Hailing Iran-Turkey good interaction in the field, Rouhani said that Iran’s territorial integrity is very significant and vital to Iran and s clear message should be signaled to those disrupting regional stability and security.

Regional states’ coordination in this respect is very important and no doubt they will never allow development of new instability in the region, he said.

Erdoghan underlined Turkey’s readiness to promote its ties with Iran in all fields.

All relevant ministries have prepared plans for developing bilateral relations to be discussed during the fourth meeting of Iran-Turkey High Strategic Council, he said.

According to NTV television network, both presidents stressed the need to maintain Iraq’s territorial integrity in their phone talks.

Despite global and central government’s opposition to holding referendum by Iraqi Kurdistan, Head of Iraqi Kurdistan’s Democrat Party insists on organizing the referendum in September 25, 2017.
