4.2 magnitude quake shakes Tehran
December 26, 2017 - A minor earthquake hit Tehran Province and nearby cities in early hours of Wednesday local time.
Border between Tehran and Alborz provinces was announced as the epicenter of the earthquake which was felt at 12:54 a.m. Iran local time, Mehr News Agency wrote.
Reports revealed that the light quake, which occurred in the depth of 12 kilometers, had a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale.
No damage or casualties have been reported from the seismic event. The quake hit the central province of Tehran exactly a week after a similar event hit the same region though at the higher magnitude of 5.2.
Over 1,500 aftershocks registered following Kermanshah quake
Over 1,500 aftershocks have been registered following a 7.3-magnitude earthquake which hit a town in western province of Kermanshah on November 12, a local official said.
Head of Kermanshah’s Seismic Network Farhad Forouzi said that about 340 aftershocks measured above 3 on Richter scale, IRNA reported.
The powerful earthquake in Sarpol-e Zahab killed more than 620 people and injured over 12,386 people.
The quake also caused damage to the buildings and infrastructure in over 10 townships and 1,930 villages in western Iran.
After the November 12 quake in Kermanshah, several other earthquakes have hit different areas in the country, inflicting damages and wounding many people across the country.
On Monday, an earthquake measuring 4.1 on Richter scale hit Kuhbanan region in Kerman Province for the third time in hours.
Earlier on Monday, Kuhbanan was hit by two consecutive tremors measuring 4.4 and 4.7.
Kuhbanan was also hit by a 5.2-magnitude earthquake on December 21, which wounded several people. However, it damaged 85 percent of the old buildings including 30 trade units and 1,500 houses.
On December 20, an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 struck a town near the Iranian capital Tehran.
The epicenter of the quake was 3 km from the city of Malard, and not far from Meshkin Dasht, which sits about 50 km west of Tehran.
The quake was also felt in Alborz, Qazvin, Qom, Gilan and Markazi provinces.
