Iran wins Asian junior FS wrestling title

July 22, 2018 -Iran’s freestyle wrestling team claimed the top spot at the 2018 Asian Junior Championships in India.

Having finished first at the Greco-Roman competitions, Iranian wrestlers kept up the momentum at the freestyle contests, dominating the championships with nine medals – including five golds.

Amir-Hossein Kavousi (70kg), Sajjad Qolami (79kg), Abbas Foroutan (92kg), Sajjad Azizi (97kg) and Amir Yari (125kg) all came out victorious in their victorious to collecting five gold medals.

In addition, Reza Alijanzadeh (57kg), Amir-Hossein Maqsoudi (65kg), Ali Savad-Kouhi (74kg) and Seyyed Sajjad Seyyedi (86kg) settled for four bronzes after beating their opponents in the repechage finals of their weight classes.

A total of nine medals and 189 points gave Iran the first-place finish, followed by India and Uzbekistan which tallied 173 and 128 points respectively.

Earlier in the Greco-Roman contests, Iran had also clinched the title with six golds, three silvers and one bronze.

Pouya Naserpour (55kg), Bahram Marouf-Khani (63kg), Amin Kavianinejad (72kg), Hossein Foruzandeh (82kg), Mohammad-Hadi Saravi (87kg) and Amin Mirzazadeh (130kg) all finished their campaign on high notes with six golds.

Furthermore, Alireza Njati (60kg), Shayan Afifi (77kg) and Vahid Dadkhah (97kg) bagged three silvers while Sajjad Imantalab was awarded with a 67kg bronze.

Iran topped the Greco-Roman standings with 225 points with Kazakhstan (147pts) and Kyrgyzstan (135pts) claimed the following spots.

The competitions took place at the Indian capital of New Delhi on July 17-22.
