Italian-Iranian ties strengthened despite US sanctions: Former ambassador

15 June 2019 - According to the former Italian envoy stressed that Tehran-Rome relations have been deepened despite the US sanctions that tried in vain to strain their political and economic ties.

The former Italian ambassador to Iran says bilateral relations between the two countries have become stronger in recent years despite the unilateral US sanctions.

“During the past five years considerable measures have been taken between Iran and Italia,” said Italian envoy to Tehran Mauro Conciatori who finished his term on Friday.

He stressed that neither country should be worried about their economic relations as their annual trade balance is 4 billion euros despite the US sanctions.

“Bilateral Iranian and Italian relations are being deepened so both parts can better plan for their future. I’m sure after this era, we’ll see a bigger leap,” noted Conciatori in a meeting with Gholam Hossein Shafei, President of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA).

Shafei praised the outgoing ambassador’s measures that have led to bigger economic cooperation between Tehran and Rome.

“A bright future awaits the two countries’ relations,” Shafei noted.

Former Italian Ambassador to Libya Giuseppe Perrone has replaced Conciatori at the head of the Italian diplomatic mission in the emblematic Neuphle le Château Street in the Iranian capital Tehran.
