Mozambique and Japan prepare new energy projects

July 3, 2017- Japan will increase investments in the energy sector in Mozambique, Foreign Minister Kentaro Sonoura said in Maputo on Thursday, after being received in an audience by Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário.

At the end of the meeting, the Japanese minister said that his three-day visit to Mozambique is fundamentally to prepare for the ministerial meeting of TICAD, a Japanese economic initiative to be held at the end of August in Maputo.

Cited by Mozambican daily newspaper Noticias, Sonoura said Mozambique is a port of entry for Japan to East and Southern Africa and recalled that the two countries cooperate in sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure and public transport.

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, where the diplomat was met by the minister of Foreign Affairs, Oldemiro Balói, the talks focused on economic and international politics as well as TICAD.

The Director for Asia and Oceania of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Belmiro Malate, said at the end of the meeting that Mozambique and Japan are preparing new projects in the energy sector, more specifically in the production of electricity.
