Commuter Trains in Greater Jakarta to Offer Free Wi-Fi, With Help From Google

Jakarta Globe | January 12, 2018- Kereta Commuter Indonesia, the commuter train operator subsidiary of state-controlled railway firm Kereta Api Indonesia, plans to equip all of its trains with free wireless internet facilities soon.

"This is part of the services provided by KCI to commuter train users," said Adli Hakim, the manager of communications at Commuter Indonesia, on Wednesday (10/01).

The company has worked with tech giant Google to install Wi-Fi networks on trains operating in the greater Jakarta area,, including Bogor and Bekasi in West Java and Serpong in Banten.

Currently, KCI has a limited network in place to stream advertisements or display train information on overhead screens on commuter trains.

The company will soon allow passengers access to that network, which includes free Wi-Fi services.

"This plan has been discussed long enough, because all commuter line passengers have mobile phones," Kereta Api Indonesia president director Edi Sukmoro said.

Kereta Api Indonesia will also expand free Wi-Fi service to all train passengers across Indonesia by the end of this year, Edi said.

KCI serves up to 1 million passenger during a normal weekday and expects a total of 320 million riders this year, up by 62 million passengers from 2014.
