Iran and Uzbekistan establish Joint Trade Committee

The Presidents of the Iranian and Uzbek Chambers of Commerce talked to each other in a video conference and, while introducing the capacities of cooperation between the two countries in the field of economy, signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint trade committee between the two countries.

According to a Fars News Agency correspondent in Tashkent, the heads of the Iran-Uzbekistan Chambers of Commerce talked to each other in a video conference, and while introducing the two countries' cooperation capacities in the field of economy, a memorandum of understanding was signed.

At the beginning of the meeting, "Mohammad Reza Karbasi", Deputy of International Affairs of the Iran Chamber, while thanking the heads of the chambers of commerce and ambassadors of the two countries, expressed hope that with the signing of the agreement, we will see the development of economic relations between the two countries.

Karbasi also described Iran's rotating presidency of the ECO Chamber of Commerce and Industry as a good opportunity to strengthen trade relations between Iran and Uzbekistan.

Emphasizing that strengthening economic cooperation and increasing trade with neighboring countries is one of the most important priorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Gholam-Hossein Shafei, President of the Iranian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said:

He added: "Iran is a link between Uzbekistan and the world due to its strategic position and proximity to the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of ​​Oman." In addition, the existence of joint cooperation in the form of regional organizations such as ECO, in addition to economic benefits, will increase the security factor in the region.

"Iran's economy, with its vast infrastructure, efficient producers and human resources, and economic capacity, is the focus of international attention, and Iran is located in a region that accounts for 70 percent of the world's oil and 40 percent of its gas," he said. It can play a significant role in the world's energy supply.

The head of the Iran Chamber also considered Iran's transit position and further stated: Iran's special position in the region, both in terms of security and geopolitics, has provided a stable prospect for investment with countries around the world.

Iran's geographical location is such that it has the shortest and fastest routes for the transit of goods between Europe and East Asia, as well as between a large part of Russia and the Middle East and North Africa region.

Referring to Iran's capabilities in the field of technical and engineering services, he said: "Iranian companies in the fields of road construction, highway construction, construction, etc. in the region have a brilliant activity and Iran's brilliant history of the private sector in the field of mines and Uzbekistan's global ranking in Allocation of gold, copper and uranium mines can lead to joint and continuous cooperation between the two countries.

Shafei also mentioned agriculture, horticulture, food, nuts, detergents, iron, steel, ceramic tiles and chemical fertilizers as other areas of joint cooperation between Iran and Uzbekistan.

He added: "Iran has made significant progress in acquiring technology in the field of nanotechnology and biotechnology in recent years, relying on indigenous knowledge and local experts and scientists. He further acknowledged  the growth and development of the two countries.

The head of the Iran Chamber stated in the meeting: without removing banking barriers and problems, reducing customs tariffs, reducing transportation costs and providing the necessary facilities in the field of rail transportation and increasing active wagons between the two countries, it is impossible to increase the volume of trade. 

He said that although the trade volume between the two countries has increased from $ 186 million in 2018 to $ 411 million in 2019, a comparison of the two countries' capabilities shows the need for more efforts to remove existing barriers.

Shafei added: "Iran Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture with more than 60,000 members consisting of prominent economic activists, 34 local chambers and more than 200 affiliated organizations isfully prepared to expand relations between the two countries, especially by strengthening provincial cooperation."  and will not hesitate to provide any assistance in this regard.
