New Border Crossing with Turkmenistan Reopened

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran reopened Lotfabad border crossing with Turkmenistan to resume trade exchanges with the Northeastern country, local official of Khorassan Razavi province said on Thursday.

Ali Rasoulian said that Lotfabad border crossing was reopened in order to resume exchange of goods with Turkmenistan as part of facilitating trade with the Northeastern neighbor.

Goods are shipped to Turkmenistan via three land border crossings of Lotfabad, Sarakhs, and Bajgiran in Khorassan Razavi province, which had been closed by the neighboring country in March 2020 following the coronavirus outbreak.

Ashgabat has reopened the Sarakhs rail route and then the Lotfabad land border by setting out conditions for Iranian trucks to cross.

In relevant remarks last month, Rasoulian said that Iranian Northeastern province of Khorassan Razavi is going to discuss the ways for regulation of border trade with Afghanistan at an economic commission meeting in the near future.

He said that the joint economic commission meeting will be held in Mashhad soon, adding, “Provincial officials have recently held talks with their Afghan counterparts and respective foreign ministry official on trade ties.”

“They reached good agreements on border trade and exports,” the official added.

Khorassan Razavi's 830 km border with Afghanistan and Turkmenistan has created great export opportunity for the province,” the official continued.

“Launching of Khaf-Herat railway and similar development in borders with Turkmenistan are on the agenda,” Rasoulian concluded.
