Iranian Police Commander Underlines Normal Trade at Borders with Afghanistan

2021-July-12

TEHRAN (FNA)- Deputy Commander of Iran's Law Enforcement Police Forces Brigadier General Qassem Rezayee stressed on Monday that trade between Iran and Afghanistan continues at Mahiroud border crossing after Taliban seized the region in the neighboring state.

General Rezayee made the remarks while visiting the shared Mahiroud border crossing with Afghanistan which is located near the city of Birjand in Iran’s South Khorassan province.

The Mahiroud border crossing was captured by the Taliban Friday.

"Security and peace prevail at the Eastern borders of the country," he said, adding, "More than 200 trucks have entered the Mahiroud border market, and trade continues as usual in this border market."

General Rezayee further said that he had spoken with a number of Afghan businessmen who had said they were satisfied with the security situation and praised the border guards of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He pointed out that "recently, there were security problems in Afghanistan, which, thanks God, they have been resolved and security has been restored at the Eastern borders of the country".

In relevant remarks on Sunday, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Force Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour said that despite the recent conflicts in a number of Afghan towns bordering Iran, security prevails at common borders.

"With regards to civil wars in Afghanistan, nothing special has happened at the border between Iran and Afghanistan and there is complete security and peace on all the Eastern borders with that country," General Pakpour said while visiting Doqarun bordering area.

"Following the incidents of the past few days in Afghanistan, it is possible that some miscreants and traffickers will take advantage of this opportunity and enter the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which will undoubtedly be dealt with severely by the Armed Forces stationed on the Eastern borders," he added.

General Pakpour said that all the borders of the country are being monitored, noting, "Any move that is intended to make Iran and the surrounding areas insecure will responded decisively by the Armed Forces."

Iran shares more than 900 kilometers of border with Afghanistan. The provinces of Herat, Farah and Nimroz in Afghanistan are bordered by the provinces of Khorassan Razavi, South Khorassan and Sistan and Balouchestan in Iran.

Over the past weeks, the Taliban have overrun areas in Afghanistan bordering five countries – Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, China and Pakistan.

On Friday, the militant group claimed that it had seized control of 85 percent of Afghan territory, a declaration government officials dismissed as part of a propaganda campaign.

The Taliban gains come amid the withdrawal of US-led troops from the country after two decades of war and occupation.
