VP: Iran-Turkmenistan Ties Role Model for Regional Countries

2022-January-10

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian First Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber underlined that the relations of Iran and Turkmenistan should turn into a role model of trade, economic and cultural relations for other countries in the region.

"Relations between Iran and Turkmenistan should be expanded in all aspects, specially in the fields of border exchanges and export of engineering services, as well as maritime, oil, energy, and railways," Mokhber said in his meeting with Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers for Economics and Finance of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedow.

Iran's first vice-president emphasized the serious determination of Iran to identify the capacities of the two countries, and said, "Iran and Turkmenistan must become a role model of trade, economic and cultural relations for other countries in the region."

Mokhber underlined the widening of relations with Iran's neighbors, including Turkmenistan, and called for the development of economic, industrial, trade, transit, and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

In a relevant development in mid-December 2021, Iranian President Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi and his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in a telephone conversation called for the expansion of economic and trade relations.

During the phone talk, the Iranian and Turkmen presidents explored avenues for the widening of mutual cooperation in the economic and trade areas.

During the telephone call, the Iranian president thanked Turkmenistan for hosting the recent ECO Summit there, and said, "A good cooperation has been conducted in the field of gas cooperation and executing the Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan gas swap through Iran."

The Iranian president also stressed cooperation in the field of transportation and transit of goods between the two countries,  and said, "With the efforts of the leaders of the two countries, good measures have been taken to strengthen border relations, and through the cooperation of the two countries, some obstacles can be removed."

President Berdimuhamedow, for his part, stressed the importance of cooperation between neighboring countries, and said, "Relations between Turkmenistan and Iran, with a thousand-year-old civilization, should continue in the form of cooperation in international organizations."

The Turkmen president termed the gas swap agreement between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan through Iranian soil as important and called for the establishment of a joint commission for cooperation in this field among the three countries.

A trilateral agreement to swap 1.2 to two billion cubic meters of Turkmenistan’s natural gas to the Republic of Azerbaijan via Iran was signed in Ashgabat in the presence of President Rayeesi and his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev.

According to the agreement which was initially signed by oil ministers of the involved countries on the sideline of the ongoing ECO Summit in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan will sell five to six million cubic meters of natural gas to the Azerbaijan Republic each day.

This gas will be swapped to Azerbaijan through Iran's soil and the contract which has no ending date will be implemented as of December 25, 2021.

According to this swap deal, Iran will get Turkmenistan’s exported gas at the joint border to use it for Iranian provinces and in return will deliver the same quantity of Iranian gas to the Azerbaijan Republic at its border with Iran.
