Three institutions win the 2017 IsDB Prizes for Science and Technology
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, 04 April, 2017 – Three scientific institutions from Indonesia, Malaysia and Sudan have won this year’s IsDB Prizes for Science and Technology.
Dr. Bandar Hajjar, President of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group announced the winning entries screened by an independent selection committee. This is the 15th year the prizes have been awarded.
The 2017 winners are:
• Universitas Indonesia for overall outstanding contribution to social and economic development
• Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Universiti, Teknologi, Malaysia for most outstanding contribution in a given scientific field.
• Faculty of Medicine, University of Gezira, Sudan for most noted scientific institution from a Least Developed Member Country(LDMC)
“I would like to congratulate the winners of this year’s competition,” said Dr. Bandar Hajjar. “IsDB is proud of their inspiring feats in the field of scientific and technological research. I hope other universities and scientific centers in member countries benefit from these admirable examples.”
The prize was established in 2002 to promote science and technology excellence and capacity building in IsDB member countries. Each year, three institutions are selected by an independent panel of eminent scientists outside the Bank to receive the prize in one of the three categories. Each prize consists of a cash award of US $100,000 and a trophy.
This year’s prizes will be awarded during the 42nd Annual Meeting of IsDB’s Board of Governors, which will take place in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 17-18 May 2017.
Since 2002, the prizes have been awarded to institutions in Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Egypt, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Sudan, Tajikistan and Turkey.
Meet the winners
Universitas Indonesia
Established in 1849, it is among the oldest tertiary institution in Indonesia ranked among the top universities of the world. Over the years, its scholarly work has had great scientific technological, socio-economic, and environmental impact in Indonesia. In the last 5 years the university has contributed to the development of human resources in Indonesia as well as the region by awarding an impressive number of graduates and post graduates degrees. It has also published in the same period, huge
number of books and scientific articles with high impact factor. The University has registered a large number of patents and inventions of which many have been either commercialized or industrialized. The university helped increase the value of local resources through its research by developing techniques for manufacturing of palm oil derivatives and fuel additives which has benefited Indonesian companies. The university is also an active member of Asian and Southeast Asian education and R&D
group of institution/organizations. The University plays an active role in several higher learning associations and networks in Asia Pacific, South East Asia and Europe.
Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Universiti, Teknologi, Malaysia
Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (FCEE) is a recognized center for research and development and education in the areas of bio-technology and natural products, membrane technology, process systems, hydrogen economy and energy in general. In terms of scientific knowledge production, the staff of FCEE managed to produce in one year, alone, as many as 432 scientific publications in world renowned (Indexed) journals with cumulative citations exceeding 9500.
Among the numerous achievements of FCEE, pioneering research work has led to the development of advanced membranes. These membranes, with enhanced performance through the incorporation of nano filters in a polymer host matrix, serve as a potential material for membrane-based separation, such as gas separation in the oil and gas industry, water and waste water treatments as well as sea water desalination. FCEE has 78 patents, with 32 products commercialized. FCEE has contributed to the expansion
of the scientific community in Malaysia by awarding 132 Ph.D. degrees and 808 M.Sc degree over the past 5 years. FCEE has developed intense collaboration, strong ties, and important exchange program with several well-known local, regional, international institutions and industrial companies.
Faculty of Medicine, University of Gezira, Sudan
Established in 1975 as part of The University of Gezira, the Faculty of Medicine set a unique and innovative system of medical education and training by incorporating and integrating problem-based learning and community oriented learning. The students in the faculty are strongly connected to the community by addressing their major health problems. This is a distinguishing mark of the learning and practicing behavior at the University. The Faculty has strived hard to effectively organize field
training courses in the network of several specialized hospitals, many rural hospitals, and numerous health centers. It is duly accredited to train specialists with emphasis on primary care, radiology, urology and pediatric surgery. In addition, FMUG has pioneered a program to upgrade the training of mid-career family physicians to give them enhanced skills as primary care physicians.The Faculty program of education and training has become a model followed by more than 20 colleges in Sudan as
well as in East African Universities. In addition to Sudan, the Faculty is attracting students from the Middle East and East African countries.
