First Lady of Sudan Commends the Role of OIC and its Partner's Efforts to Tackle Cancer
23/03/2017 - The First Lady of the Republic of Sudan, Mrs. Widad Babekir Omer, graced the closing session of the OIC-IDB-IAEA Meeting to review funding gaps and mobilize resources for the implementation of priority interventions in the National Cancer Control Programmes among common member states which was held in Khartoum, Sudan from 20-22 March 2017.
Representatives of 18 OIC Member States, Development Funds including Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA); African Development Bank (AfDB); and International Organisations including World Health Organisation (WHO) attended the meeting.
In her remarks during the closing session, the First Lady commended the efforts being exerted by the three partners in tackling cancer among their common member states.
The Meeting had been opened on 20 March 2017 by the Vice President of the Republic of Sudan H. E. Mr. Hassabu Mohamed Abdalrahman who called on the partners to intensify research in the area of cancer so as to know the factors that have led to a sharp increase of cancer incidence in many of the OIC Member States.
The three-day meeting provided a platform for member states that had successfully received support from IAEA-IDB-OIC project to tackle cancer in identified member states to share their experiences, which will be beneficial to future recipients. It also reached useful conclusions and made recommendations on how the Programme can be improved and expanded based on the experience gained since its inception in 2012.
